Phu Quoc Island is located in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 400 km west of Ho Chi Minh City. It is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists due to its diverse tourism offerings, abundant marine and island resources, and diverse ecosystems of forests and seas.
The marine area of Phu Quoc consists of 22 large and small islands, with a total area of about 589.23 square kilometers. Among them, Phu Quoc Island is the largest and is divided into the northern and southern parts, with the town of Duong Dong located in the center.
The best time to visit Phu Quoc is typically from November to April. This is the dry season in the southern region, with less rain, calm seas, gentle waves, and warm sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities. This season is suitable for resort vacations but may not be suitable for adventure or backpacking trips.
From around May to October, Phu Quoc experiences its rainy season, occasionally with storms, but it still attracts visitors due to the summer vacation period. If you visit Phu Quoc during this time, it's advisable to come in late April when the crowds are thinner, the weather is still pleasant, and prices are not as high as during the peak season. October is also a transitional month with less rain.
Getting There:
- By Air: Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and Vietjet Air offer direct flights to Phu Quoc from various cities in Vietnam, including Hanoi, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Buon Ma Thuot, and more. Flight ticket prices can be quite affordable, especially if you manage to find deals for under one million Vietnamese dong for a round trip.
- By Sea:Besides direct flights, you can also choose more adventurous ways to reach Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City, such as by motorbike, car, passenger bus, high-speed ferry, or regular ferry.
The most common modes of transportation on Phu Quoc Island are taxis and motorbikes. Typically, taxi companies and rental services offer half-day or full-day island exploration packages, where drivers take you to the most famous attractions.
Additionally, you can rent a motorbike. Visitors are required to leave their ID cards or passports when renting one. Before riding, it's essential to check the brakes, turn signals, and lights of the bike for safety.
There is a bus system on the island that operates on most routes, connecting the airport to Duong Dong town and the An Thoi port. However, buses may not be convenient for reaching distant tourist spots.
Accommodation:
Phu Quoc offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget guesthouses to high-end international resorts. If you're looking to save on costs, consider staying at a homestay. If you're traveling with a group or family with young children, it's best to stay in Duong Dong town, which is convenient for both sightseeing and shopping.
Unlike Nha Trang, where the beaches are easily accessible from main roads, on Phu Quoc, tourists often need to travel some distance to reach the beaches. Therefore, if you seek tranquility and relaxation, it's advisable to stay in resorts, villas, or beachfront bungalows.
You can choose your accommodation based on location:
- In the North of the island: Vinpearl Phu Quoc Resort, Nam Nghi Coral Peninsula Phu Quoc, Fusion Resort Phu Quoc.
- In the East of the island: Rocks Beach Boutique Phu Quoc, located in Ham Ninh commune, is a new addition and has been compared to a "mini Maldives."
