When mentioning Cao Bang, travel enthusiasts immediately think of the Northern region with its majestic, untouched nature and a cool climate throughout all four seasons of the year. Furthermore, Cao Bang is renowned for its numerous primeval forests and dense river and stream systems. These factors have contributed to making this place a beloved destination for travel enthusiasts who enjoy exploring nature.
Ban Gioc Waterfall has been listed among the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia and is also ranked fourth among the world's largest waterfall systems. Situated at the crossroads of the China-Vietnam border, Ban Gioc appears like a strip of pure white silk amidst the lush mountains of Cao Bang, cascading into the emerald Quay Son River.
The distinctive feature of this waterfall is its unique tiered structure, with water flowing through multiple limestone layers and vegetation. At the base of the falls, you'll find traditional houses and vibrant green terraced fields belonging to the Nung and Tay ethnic groups.
Ban Gioc Waterfall is approximately 100km away from the center of Cao Bang and can be reached by bus or motorbike. The ideal time to visit is from August to November. During the period from August to September, Cao Bang experiences the end of the rainy season, resulting in a high water volume at the falls and stunning azure color. In contrast, October is the harvest season, and November is when wild sunflowers bloom.
Ma Phuc Pass is the most beautiful pass in Cao Bang Province, attracting travel enthusiasts with its breathtaking natural beauty. Located in Tra Linh District, the pass is about 3.5 km long and reaches a height of 700m above sea level. True to its name, Ma Phuc Pass winds across a limestone mountain range and valley, resembling a galloping horse.
This pass is among the most challenging roads in Vietnam and is also recognized as part of the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The best times to visit are early winter (flowering triangle oat season) and spring (rice and corn planting season).
Apart from its dramatic landscape, Ma Phuc Pass welcomes visitors with traditional markets and local delicacies such as seven-flavor roasted duck, purple sticky rice cakes, and "banh khao" cakes.
Also located in Tra Linh District, Thang Hen Lake is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Cao Bang. The lake is part of a group of 36 natural lakes situated at an altitude of nearly 1700m, interconnected by a system of underground caves. Among them, Thang Hen Lake boasts the largest surface area and attracts the most travel enthusiasts.
The lake offers one of the most stunning landscapes in Northern Vietnam, with its turquoise water reflecting the sky and surrounded by primeval forests and wildflower carpets. Although the water may turn murky during the rainy season, the scene remains as picturesque as a watercolor painting amid the Northeast mountains.
When visiting Thang Hen Lake, you can stroll around the lake, explore nature by boat, or check out nearby attractions such as the solitary rock mound, wild sunflower fields, ancient houses in Lung Tao, or Ma Phuc Pass. For the best experience, it's recommended to arrive at Thang Hen Lake early in the morning to witness the beautiful sunrise.
Despite existing for over 400 million years, Nguom Ngao Cave was only opened for tourism in 1996. In the Tày language, "Nguom Ngao" translates to "tiger cave." Nestled within the mountainous region of Trung Khanh District, this limestone cave stretches over 2100m.
Nguom Ngao has three main entrances: Ngom Lom, Nguom Ngao, and Ban Thuon. Stepping into Nguom Ngao Cave, you'll be awe-struck by the magnificent natural beauty of this Cao Bang tourist attraction. The unique formations of limestone and vibrant colors create a stunning spectacle throughout every corner.
What's particularly remarkable is the cave's ideal temperature, staying cool in summer and warm in winter. Inside the cave, you'll also find small streams flowing playfully. Nguom Ngao Cave is only about 5km away from Ban Gioc Waterfall, making it a great addition to your tour itinerary.
Located just about 2km from the center of Cao Bang city, Nghieu Son Linh is a mountain range alongside the gentle Bang River. It's not only a picturesque landscape but also holds historical significance for the Cao Bang region. In the past, this area served as a strategic military post against northern invaders and later became deserted, covered by dense forests.
Nghieu Son Linh features two mountain peaks, Khau Tho and Khau Khieu. Nestled between these peaks is the Nà Lữ fortress and steep slopes. Currently, only a 15m-wide section of the fortress remains, encircling the mountain's base.
When talking about famous check-in spots in Cao Bang, the Pac Bo historical site cannot be overlooked. Not only is it historically significant, but it also offers breathtaking natural beauty. Covering an area of over 500 hectares, this site is divided into many clusters of relics associated with Ho Chi Minh's daily activities. Among them, Hang Coc Bo, Lenin Stream, milestone 108, and the Gooc Mu terraced fields are the most famous.
The Pac Bo historical site is beautiful throughout the year, but it's recommended to visit during the dry months (from May to September). During this period, nature at Pac Bo is at its greenest, Lenin Stream flows gently, and the weather is ideal for exploration.
Located more than 50km from the city center, the road to Pac Bo passes through many other famous tourist destinations in Cao Bang, such as Ban Gioc Waterfall and Thang Hen Lake. When you're here, be sure to enjoy Cao Bang's specialties like sour noodle soup, Pac Bo sticky rice, and sausages.
This is one of the first temples in the Northeast region of Vietnam. Nestled against Phia Nhằm Mountain, Truc Lam Ban Gioc Buddhist Temple covers an area of 3 hectares. From the temple, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Ban Gioc Waterfall and the valley below.
The temple is divided into various sections, including the Three Gates, Three Treasures Hall, statue garden, and shrine. The entire temple is designed in traditional Vietnamese architectural style using familiar materials like ironwood and tiled roofs.
The best times to visit the temple are early in the morning and late in the afternoon, allowing you to witness the beautiful sunrise or sunset. Thus, this location isn't just a famous spiritual tourist spot but also an ideal viewpoint of Cao Bang.
Located within the Ban Gioc Waterfall tourism area, Khuoi Ky Village is over 400 years old and situated around 100km from the center of Cao Bang. Occupying an area of about 1 hectare against a limestone mountain, this is the home of over 14 Tày ethnic households.
The distinctive feature of this ancient Cao Bang tourist spot is the stone houses built since 1594. The architectural style of these houses follows the traditional design—three-room houses with tiled roofs and stone foundations.
